DURANGO BAND INFORMATION, BAND CAMP SCHEDULE AND 2008-2009 SCHEDULE

June 18, 2008

Dear Band and Colorguard Members, and Parents/Guardians,

I hope that you are enjoying your summer break; I know it has been much needed and much deserved by all of us.   In terms of planning the rest of your summer, I wanted to give a reminder that the Durango Band Camp will be upon us before we know it.  Below is the summer schedule and band camp schedule for the marching band and colorguard!

Many of you should have already received the music for the 2008 show, but if you have not, please email me at wwwoodworth@interact.ccsd.net and I will email you your parts so that you can practice before band camp starts.  (Please be patient as I am revising the music slightly). Also, many of you performing on very large instruments may need school instruments to perform on, therefore, we will have instrument checkout on Thursday, August 7th from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Due to an extremely limited number of school owned clarinets, flutes, saxophones, trombones and trumpets, I would encourage you to use the local instrument music shops (Kessler, Music and Arts Center, etc…) to rent or purchase instruments for the school year.   I would also strongly suggest that students not use instruments that are purchased from a general warehouse store, as these instruments are poorly made and designed, have a far inferior sound production, and are far more expensive to repair when they break then standard instruments that you can rent or buy from actual music shops in town.

Again, please take note of the following schedule as we prepare for the coming school year, and just a reminder that the band camp is required for the band and colorguard students.

Also, if there are any woodwind members interested in participating in colorguard (spinning flags and props during the marching show), this coming season, that would be encouraged and it would be very helpful to our program!  Any member who chooses to participate in colorguard would still be able to play their instrument during the pep band and concert band seasons!  It is the best of both worlds!

Again, thank you for all of the support and I am extremely excited for the future of the Durango Band program!  We are going to have an amazing year!

Sincerely,

William W. Woodworth
Director of Bands

Once school begins, the normal weekly rehearsals will be:

Every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the marching season – 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

We will also have sectional times available for section leaders and instructors to call sectionals throughout the week afterschool (each section will be required to have at least one sectional per week throughout the marching season – these sectionals will be a part of the participation grade).  If needed, I may call additional afterschool rehearsals throughout the year.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATION: All students will be expected to pay their Period 7, Advanced Band elective fee of $50.00 before the end of the band camp, on August 22nd.  It is from this money that the registration fees for the marching competitions, payment to staff members, band t-shirts, and other important band expenditures are paid.  All members will also need to also need to pay $33.00 to cover the cost of their marching shoes and black gloves for the uniform. (Colorguard shoes are usually $25.00)…

IMPORTANT: Student failure to attend the sectionals, afterschool and evening rehearsals and the performances throughout the school year will result in a failing grade for the student’s quarter grade.  Missing even one performance during the year will lower the grade to an F for the quarter, so please understand the time commitment required to be successful in the Durango Bands.
